Cloth Diapers 101

Cloth diapers are a great way to provide healthy, efficient and adorable diapers to the benefit of the baby. They have been around for quite some time now, even though most of us have had little to no understanding of them and aren't even familiar with how they work.

Cloth diapers remain a good alternative to its disposable counterpart. Modern cloth diapers are not only extremely cute; they are designed to make sure they are as convenient as the throw-a-ways. They are easy to wash, easy to use, and are almost leak free. Although the biggest issue most people have with using cloth diapers is the laundering issue, the introduction of modern dryers/washers has made washing diapers almost effortless.

Diaper Options

Flat: This is flat-shaped cloth diaper. It requires a cover and a clothes pin and needed to be folded into shape before use. It is the easiest to dry.

Pre-fold: This is similar to flat, but it eliminates the folding stage since it has already been sown in place so that it doesn’t unfold. The major advantage of pre-folds over flats is that pre-folds contain more layers at the center where absorbency is required the most to keep the baby dry.

We also have the all-in cloth diapers. The 'all-in' diapers combine both the waterproof cover and the diaper itself without the need to use them separately on the baby. The cover and the diaper are both sewn together – all you need do is to snap it on your baby's waist.

All-in-ones covers: This is similar to a disposable diaper. It comprises the outer waterproof cover and the inner absorbent cloth. It is the easiest to use and does not require using a cover or a pre-fold - Just put it on and that’s all.

All-in-twos covers: They are designed in such a way that you can take off the inner absorbent cloth from the outer waterproof cover. The major advantage it has is that the waterproof cover can be reused with a new fresh diaper. Additionally, it makes for easier laundering.

One-size: This type of diaper grows with your baby, making it the economical choice for cloth diapering experience.

How To Take Care Of Your Cloth Diapers

You can wash your cloth diapers every two to three days. In between these washes, make sure your diapers are kept in a diaper pail. Add a sprinkle of baking soda into the pail to keep off the stunk. The normal diaper wash is - one cold wash, one hot wash with your cloth diaper detergent, after that, a warm and cold rinse. Be sure to rinse the diaper again if you could still see bubbles in the wash. Remnants of detergent can irritate baby's skin.
